We Believe…

…the Arts are a unique medium for developmentally delayed individuals. Residents of Western Carolina Center experience the Arts to explore self-awareness, expression, communication options, socialization and self worth.

…the Arts are therapeutic processes spanning not only the making but the presenting of works. The deep level of engagement in the processes is evidence of focus and growth.

Current Areas of Focus

Visual Art
Music Therapy
Drama/Movement

The Creative Therapy Department developed the first independent program in the nation to deal exclusively with the arts among persons labeled “developmentally delayed." We now provide opportunities in Art, Music Therapy and Drama/Movement for more than 350 severe/profound DD adult residents of Western Carolina Center.

We also offer classes and workshops to a diverse population in the surrounding community and state.

Internship programs are available in Music Therapy; Art/Psychology; Drama; Art Education (grades K-12).
