We Believe…

in providing a pleasing and interesting atmosphere that will lift the spirits of our visitors, patients and staff.

The purpose of our art program is to provide a pleasing and interesting atmosphere that will lift the spirits of our visitors, patients and staff.
Two years ago Volunteer Services began investigating ways to humanize our very sterile hospital. We imagined our long hallways, waiting areas, and patient rooms as art galleries.
Now, we are also able to offer local artists a high traffic area to display, sell and perform their work, while subsidizing the Auxiliary's host of services for needy patients.

Current Areas of Focus

Since the hospital opened in l964, the hospital Auxiliary has purchased framed paintings for placement in public areas throughout the hospital.

A bronze statue serves as the centerpiece in each of two gardens on the hospital campus, one for our Rehabilitation Center and the other for our Emergency department.

In 1992, the Auxiliary made a gift of $100,000 to the hospital to buy original artwork, preferably from North Carolina artists. The purchase of artwork is now made by selected people in the community who are knowledgeable about art.

Also in 1992, monies from the Auxiliary’s $100,000 gift were used to support a quilting project for our Women’s Center. About forty quilters from across North Carolina were asked to submit design proposals for wall quilts to hang in Labor and Delivery and the Mother/Baby units. This project was termed, “Women’s Art for Women,” patterned after a similar program on the OB/GYN unit at Duke University Medical Center.

In 1999, Gayle Tustin, a clay artist from Wilmington, N.C., was commissioned to create 3-dimensional murals for three large wall spaces. The project was finalized in June 2001.

Forsyth Medical Center is currently building a new cancer center. Our Hospital Foundation was awarded a grant from the Winston-Salem Arts Council to continue our focus on art. The money will be used for interactive art projects with patients who are being treated for cancer.
